Ellen Bosman has an excellent site which has “links to library associations, software for running a library, and reviews of print and electronic sources designed to aid in library purchasing. The site will be most useful to church and synagogue librarians, although anyone interested in learning about church libraries, or finding worthy religion books and videos, may find helpful information.” http://web.nmsu.edu/~ebosman/church

Book Reviews

Library Journal http://www.libraryjournal.com/ publishes Christian fiction reviews approximately four times a year. At the web site, search for “Christian fiction” to find the columns. Also in nearly every issue in the non-fiction reviews under the Arts & Humanities section is a sub-section of Religion books.

Directory of Open Access Journals- links to “free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals”. http://www.doaj.org/doaj?func=home Clicking on the Philosophy and Religion section reveals 46 under the subject of Religion. For church librarians journals such as these can be checked for book reviews. For instance Review of Biblical Literature and Journal of Religion and Popular Culture have book reviews.  In general most of the journals would be of more interest to pastors than laymen but there may be some in your congregation who would like to peruse them.

Misc

http://www.acu.edu/academics/library/cfm/churchlibrary.html The Church Library: An Outline of Procedure by Erma Jean Loveland (3rd ed. 2000) She apparently works at Abilene Christian University and the full text of this work is at their Special Collections web site. It deals with why & how to set up a church library. I loved the opening paragraph of the “Beginning” section: “Paul wrote to Timothy, "When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all, the parchments." 2 Timothy 4:13. Paul had need of books: how much more the growing Christian of today needs the stimulus of books for reference, for Bible study, for inspiration in Christian living!”

ISBN-13

On Jan. 1, 2007 the book industry began using 13 digit ISBN’s. This was done to “expand the numbering capacity of the ISBN system and alleviate numbering shortages in certain areas of the world and to fully align the numbering system for books with the global EAN, UCC identification system that is widely used to identify most other consumer goods worldwide.” This means the barcode you see on the back of the book (the EAN or International Article Number- originally European Article number) is now the ISBN. All ISBN’s now start with 978 and as 978 is used up they will move to 979. Most systems are still using both 10 and 13 digit ISBN’s. OCLC has added a converted ISBN to all its holdings so even older books can now be identified with the 13 digit ISBN. This is useful if looking for a reprint.

There are many converters out there. Here is the one at R.R. Bowker, the US ISBN agency http://www.isbn.org/converterpub.asp
